World's Best Pizza

There's nothing like hanging out with friends and kicking back with pizza and beer. The typical go-to pizza chains are just a no-go for me. This is where World's Best Pizza steps in. These guys are pretty cocky to call themselves the best, but they are definitely not all talk. World's Best boasts great quality ingredients for their pizzas. Let's take a look:

World's Best's pepperoni stomps on all the pepperoni pizzas I've ever tried. The guys here are extremely generous with toppings and really heap them on. While the picture above looks like nothing but a gooey mess of cheese, you will find that the topping-to-crust ratio is balanced. The pizza is kinda deep and with a moist, chewy crust. None of that stale, dry Papa Johns stuff.

Don't shoot me for bagging on pizza chains. I've just had too many bad experiences with them in college. Example: Finals week. I'm exhausted and hungry. Papa Johns delivers me a pizza with so little sauce, cheese, and toppings that I can see patches of dough.

I'm not a very forgiving guy. :D

Chains have nothing on this:

The Hawaiian tastes better than it looks. You can make this pizza taste even better by sprinkling on some red pepper flakes.

Too bad I can only enjoy World's Best when I visit LA. They oughta open one here in San Diego...

Hey Roger - We used to eat from World's Best when we lived in the area.....not sure if it's the World's Best, but it sure does bring back nice memories (along with the Chicken Box's Monday Night Special) for us!

haha yeah certainly not the best in the world. a claim like that is way ballsy!

Belated happy birthday! I was very excited thinking you had discovered a new pizza joint in SD, but I suppose I'll have to wait for an LA visit. I just had drunken Papa John's the other night. It was good, but I was not sober :)

Have you been to Basic near Petco Park? They serve New Haven, CT, style, thin-crust, brick-oven pizza. It's a bit pricey for pizza but it's more than worth it. I would say it's the best pizza in San Diego ... probably not the world. And, obviously, the proprietors of World's Best Pizza don't have the competition of the NY pizza scene.

LMC, (can I call you that for short, little miss contrary?) thanks for the pizza recommendation. It is much appreciated!

I can't wait to get over to Basic.

In my experience, people will eat poo-poo if it is connected to some sort of local pride that makes them feel like they are somebody. But, if it were possible for these "sports fans" to discern the opinion of their taste-buds from the opinion of the herd they belong to, they would be able to tell that almost all pizza is garbage. I have been all over the world and have eaten pizza everywhere(unfortunately), and this I can say for sure- ALL chicago pizza is doughy and uninteresting, and is preferred by overweight people who value quantity over quality- oh boy! raw dough!! New York pizzas are oversimplified recipes with varying qualities of crusts, but a flavor that relies almost entirely upon sprinkled oregano and garlic salt. Any one who considers that special has no business giving out food advice, period. There is no good pizza in California, 'nuff said. Finally, for some reason, the best pizza- we're talking flavor and texture, not any-other-thing, is................IN COLUMBUS, OHIO! And it comes down to two places- Tommy's, and Massy's. Tommy's has flakey crisp crust that is layered and absolutely delicious, not just a bunch of dough. Massy's crust is similar, but is also under-coated with a large-grit cornmeal that is truly unique and does something special to the flavor and mouth-feel. both have ample and very rich sauce, copious amounts of provolone, and, when you order just pepperoni (which I highly recommend) they use gobs and gobs of it, and all of them curl up and toast around the edges! Freakin' Delicious! Their pizzas are well-crafted and carefully seasoned, not just big. So, don't believe the hype about N.Y. and Chicago, folks. If you want the best, ya gotta come to Cowtown.

oh, and, by the way, that is not a lot of pepperoni.

CWMG, while I appreciate your contribution of personal experiences and observations, please keep in mind that for those who do not have easy access to better pies have to make do with what is more readily available to them. Of course there are pizzas better than the ones in California. That said, I bet there are better ones than the ones you described from Cowtown...as delicious as they might sound.

Lastly, it IS a lot of pepperoni for where I come from.

Rogerrr, If I have upset you, please accept my apology, but what i wrote was meant to entertain and was not scientific data to be analyzed for its veracity. Cheers,CWMG

Oh no no. Don't worry about it! You did not upset me. I really enjoyed reading your description of the pizza.

Looks like I have some real work to do on conveying intended tone. :(

Thanks for dropping by again.

me, too roger. it is hard not to sound pedantic when having a twice-removed conversation with strangers on the other side of the planet!
